Lisa Opie at Osteopath West, with her experience of competitive squash and treatment of top level tennis, squash and wheelchair tennis players and triathletes of all levels, is qualified to offer you a combination of skills. Our Osteopathic training enables us to assess and treat minor sport injuries, whilst Lisa’s degree in sport injury rehabilitation extends these skills to offer musculoskeletal management of your specific sport related injuries. The aim is to facilitate recovery of function and your return to full physical activity.
What it involves
Your first appointment will be no different from the usual osteopathic consultation and evaluation (see osteopathy page). You will be asked specific questions related to your particular sport or even to demonstrate some movements. Your diagnosis and treatment plan will be discussed in the usual way. Treatment is likely to involve the use of osteopathic techniques within the treatment room combined with a more specific exercise based programme using our exercise software programme.
Techniques Used
An individually tailored treatment plan will be devised on diagnosis using the most appropriate techniques for you. Techniques may include mobilisation, manipulation, articulation, soft tissue massage, muscle energy techniques, stretching, core strength/stability, strengthening and balance exercises. Kinesio taping may also be used to assist your recovery and you are likely to be prescribed progressive exercises to do in between appointments using the widely accepted Rehab My Patient software. Recommendation of referral to other specialists can be advised if necessary.
Corrective Massage
Jeremy Jones-Bateman, one of our highly trained osteopaths, also offers Corrective Massage which is used to restore muscle balance and relieve pain including myo-fascial release and trigger-point therapy techniques with stretching. Corrective massage enables you to achieve normal range of motion in areas that have been compromised by restrictions, both acute and chronic pain can significantly decrease through corrective massage, providing long-term results.
